- Hi Paul: My experiments with the magnetic stuff were inconclusive. First of all, the magnetic sheets I had were white vinyl coated, and this stuff started to crack and peel off after the first year.

- Also, clean the exposed portion of the thread as best you can. Wire brush it right down to bare metal if possible. There's no point in dragging even more rust and crud through the threaded part once
