John, The best way to keep from ripping the fenders to he$^ is to avoid lifting by the latches. Lift instead by the wheel arch, then grab the center of the bonnet when it clears the cowl. Joe

I have them on both side of the car, and they were not enought to hold the bonnet up. As to the measurments, I will have to get it off the car tonight. I think struts from a minivan would be a better

I have found gas struts which should have sufficient force to lift the hood (especially with two of them), however the overall length and the working length of the strut must be carefully calculated
