It is not possible for a universal joint to have 20 - 30 degrees of free play and still function without it letting you know very loudly at very low speeds that something is very very wrong. Me think

No need to torque head (or any other stud). Just make sure that everything is clean, and run down finger tight, perhaps with a small 'nip' on them to help keep them in place when the head is removed

The bits in the gearbox that slush the oil up from the bottom do not rotate when under tow. But given that, there is usually a bit of oil around the rest of the bits if the car has been driven recent
