The shiny spots are hard spots in the cast iron caused by overheating and cooling cycles. Cummins cylinder liners used to do the same thing if you really overheated them. I think the pulsations are
Did installing new rotors & pads cure the problem? Regards, Neil Tucson, AZ List -- HELP. Problem: Strange looking rotors off my 2001 Honda Odyssey van. Go to: http://home.earthlink.net/~basavage an
Glenn, David, Ron, Jonathan, Doc and Neil, Thanks for the information. I thought that's what it might be because I did that to a rotor with a greasy finger many years ago. But it was obvious it was a
If this is happening to new rotors, I'd take them back and complain about this problem; it should not happen in so few miles. Good quality rotors should not distort or heat-spot in 800 miles! Make s
One more thing to check-- make sure your lug nuts are evenly torqued to their specs. Overtightening them will distort a rotor. Regards, Neil Tucson, AZ Bryan; If this is happening to new rotors, I'd
That's why most brake experts replace rotors that have developed hard spots." We turn them on a regular basis. Don't remember the last time one came back. This is an industry wide MAP aproved standar
Are "hard spots" real hard? Doesn't it require grinding the surface? My OEM rotors only have 0.075 left. (0.005 wear). Doesn't seem like much..!.?.. Oh well, I have learned a lot of good stuff that
Yep...those shiny spots are harder than the dull metal and the pad scuff across them differently and creates a vibration. The hardness is no where near as deep in the metal as the shiny spot is wide

Hard spots can be really hard! Many times they can be machined with a lathe tool, but more often they require grinding. Lots of shops don't have the capability of grinding rotors, (I am not referrin
Thanks for the information Doc. I plan on being easier on the brakes now see that their limits are less than I expected. The last thing I did before mounting them was wipe them off with MEK -- twice.
