On the early 1600s (mine is a 66) it is a hydraulic part on the firewall, screws into the top of a block with brake lines coming into it. The part is from a very early 50s Ford, I recall, or a Hudson

My '68 and '69 have mechanical plunger switches mounted below the steering column cross brace. Normally "closed", they are held "open" when the brake pedal is at rest, held by the retraction spring.

Early VWs had metric thread hydraulic brake switches! My 67 van had two, one as a backup, even though it was a single suicide style system. I bet they would work in roadsters needing a metric switch,
