Out on the toll road last friday, running 2800 rpm, smooth and great, when something lets go and engine runs really rough 'til I pull to the shoulder and shut down. No loud metallic noises. Sounds l

Was the head re-torqued and the valves re-adjusted? When I replaced the head on mine this spring I found that the valves had to be adjusted a second time after the car had run for an hour or so. Dunn

Mike-The first thing I would suspect if the engine was just rebuilt and bronze guides installed, is insufficient clearance between the the valve stems & guides. When the engine gets up to operating t

Mike--I don' think the valve springs would've been too strong. And the likelyhood of them bottoming out would only happen if the head was milled to where the assembler lost all clearance when setting

Ditto - I agree. Check the valve guide clearances. As for the valve lash changing after initial engine run-in, the answer is "yes, the clearances _will_ change". This is part of the "bedding in" of t

Actually the effect that mike describes, (a blowback through the carbs), is an indication that an exhaust valve "isn't" opening! If we assume that a completed cycle is when the piston returns to TDC

Jim--I see what you mean about blowback thru the carbs, when caused by an exhaust valve not opening. During what should've been valve overlap, compression could've been very high. But it would seem t

Great answers, everyone! Of course, just like Dick says, it's great fun when you're not staring at the broken toy. Sorry, Dick! Jim wins the prize this time. #5 push rod sheared at mid point. (4 othe

OK, Mike--I will gracefully bow to Jim (and others) as I knowingly took a path of lower percentage. Still not known, to me anyway, is what broke the pushrods? If #3 (exhaust) valve stayed closed, it'

Below you mention that several push rods appear to have been making contact with the cylinder head. Does it look like they made contact as a result of being bent, or do they look well scuffed at mid

Let me say that I have never done a complete engine rebuild, I have replaced a few heads on my 250s. I would find it unlikely that the lifters would stick. The get a LOT of oil and even if they did,
