Philip,
Your axle bearings are correct. They should have a steel tube spacer between
them. I know of some Lotus 23's which have been converted to taper roller
bearings, but the two 208 bearings are what the car left the factory with.
Please note, some high quality double seal ball bearings have removeable and
replaceable seals. I've actually "poped" the seals out to look inside, add a
little grease and reassembled, but never replaced just the seals. This was very
common practice at Lotus during that time period. Rear bearings on the Elan are
same way, just a smaller size. Of passing interest is that the side bearing on
the Eleven deDion center section is just a double sealed ball bearing and the
seals double as the differential lube seals. There is no separate seal. It
works, so who's to argue with success.

To anyone that can help:
I have just taken my axles out with the intention of repacking with
silicone grease and was amazed to find standard #208 bearings with
double seals which of course are packed by the manufacturer when
produced. It is easy enough to replace the bearings with the
manufacturers grease of course.
Is this the correct bearing that should be on my axle or has it been
changed over the years? and should I be concerned with the type of
grease which is in small quantities contained within the bearing itself.
Looking forward to any input you can give me as I do not wish to loose
a back axle.
