True, they are expensive, but these use the newest, highest tech sensor
technology which is more complicated and expensive than just an oxygen
sensor. The UEGO (for Universal Exhaust Gas SensOr) interface and sensor
alone from NGK is around $1K. The improvement is in the response rate (we're
querying it twice per second), and in the resolution and range. While
everyone may not need this for their tuning, true engine development
engineers do for emissions and performance development.
THe more expensive commercial units also include data storage and conversion
features that the average tuner may not need.
The one from the dyno shop looks interesting (see other posts), although it
says it uses an oxygen sensor and not the UEGO sensor. This might be just
fine for your needs.
