I have Dayton wire wheels on my TR6. I had the wheels serviced =
by New England Wheel Specialty Co. about 3 years back. After many years =
of use the wheels were true and did not require any adjustment. On the =
advice of the owner I got new tiers from Tire Rack and had them =
delivered to, and mounted by, New England Wheel Specialty. I then had a =
persistent shimmy. I got the wheels rebalanced a couple of times and =
finally one tech told me that one tire was out of round. One thing that =
did help was using the old fashion rim weighs in place if adhesive =
weights used on the inside of the rim. After a couple of thousand miles =
on the new tires the shimmy has become almost imperceptible.
Fast forward to this summer. I needed a new set of tires for =
my truck and my go mechanic suggested that I get them from Tire Rack. My =
mechanic mounted them and when I got them home notice that the raised =
lettering was defective on 2 of the tires. That did it for me. I will =
now only buy tires and other hard to return items form local dealers. =
In both of these cases, if the tires were bought locally, I could have =
easily returned them and had them replaced. I know that getting period =
correct tires locally is almost impossible, but for me, I=E2=80=99m =
stricken local even if I have to give up a little originality.
BTW, Moss sells an adapter set to balance wire wheels on modern =
balancing machines, but the cost is north of $400.00-sometimes close =
enough is good enough.=20
Best,
Bob
