One thing you might try -- I believe the pistons and carb bodies are
supposed to be a matched set, i.e. you are not supposed to swap them. But
not knowing what might have occurred in the past you could see what the
pistons behave like if you do swap them between the two carbs.
The metal piece you describe sounds like a heat shield and the rear carb
has a bit of a leak.
As for difficulty leaning the mix on one carb - you might want to verify
the fuel level in the bowls and assure the valves are not sticking and the
floats have not gotten sodden with fuel. A length of thin wire bent into
an 'L' can be slipped alongside a float and turned to catch it and lift it
out. Then you can shake the float and listen to hear if fuel has gotten
inside.
