Since paint is the first thing seen on a car, it always seemed =
counter-intuitive to me to spend all that money on the mechanical side =
and then skimp on the paint job. I am just finishing a restoration on a =
=E2=80=9957 small-mouth where I did the rust repair (thankfully minimal =
as the car was out of CA) and lined up the panels with really good =
gaps. I welded in the new rockers and made sure everything was =
straight. Then I took the car to a shop where they went through the =
process of hammering out as much metal as possible, covering the car =
with a skim of filler, sanding, filling the pinholes with putty, =
sanding, priming x3, sanding after each coat, sealing, base, clear, =
wheeling and buffing. It took 8 weeks. The result is absolutely =
beautiful.

I paid $6000 plus materials and felt it was a great deal.

Before you pull the gearbox - if your only symptom is 'won't go into =
gear' -- you may want to check how much movement you're getting at the =
slave cylinder. If the slave & fork are moving =C2=BD" or a bit more =
then it may well be a broken fork pin. But if you are not seeing good =
movement then the problem may lie elsewhere (and be easier to deal =
with).

As for paint -- $3,000 for a decent paint job would be cheap where I =
live.
