I believe that you could buy special splash shields for several popular V8 
engines.  You would removed the valve cover and fit the shield, which caught 
the oil like a big funnel and directed it back into the engine.  I witnessed 
this in use when I was a small boy at a shop in the building where my dad's 
used-car office was on Arcade Street in Saint Paul.
