There should be a small tab of metal on the firewall/bulkhead, more or less
directly under the lever that sticks up from the rod.  It's on the edge of
the open area where the rod itself is exposed as it crosses the car.  Not
very obvious, kind of looks like a mistake or a tear in the metal, but
that's what it's there for.
