I don't have it handy to check, but my recollection is that I bought a 24"
section of 3/4" threaded rod at the hardware store and then cut it down to
suit. Don't recall if it wound up at 18" or 15". You'll want 3 or 4 nuts to
fit it and some flat washers, then something big to make the bottom plate from.
The VW pulley half was just what I had handy, I drilled holes in it to fit
over the studs in the spring pan. I double-nutted one end of the rod, added a
flat washer and the pulley half, then threaded it through first the lower then
the upper shock mounting points. Add a flat washer and single nut on the top,
then hold the top nut with a box end wrench while turning the double nuts with
an impact wrench to tighten it. MUCH more secure than the usual "bent finger"
type spring compressor.
