Curt,
Not sure if this is the connection but some of the Ferguson tractor pistons
had the fourth ring - it's another oil scraper.
Here is a page from my Ferguson website showing this:
http://www.geocities.com/wallaces_23/oldpiston.html

In case you wonder why I reference the Ferguson at all, it's because the
piston and liner sets from either TR or Fergie will fit in either block. The
Fergies had 80 mm, or later, 85 mm pistons. You can still get the 85 mm
sets.

Regards,
Jim

List,
I just pulled one of the old pistons out of my ailing motor. I was surprised
to see below the three ring grooves (with rings in them) a fourth groove
with no ring in it. This groove had holes drilled through the piston wall. I
haven't seen anything like that in my manual or in the catalogs selling new
replacement pistons. Whats up with that fourth groove?

Cheers,
Curt Fisher
