Stephen,
When I use this tool, I undo the nut partially so that I press on the nut
not the end of the stud - otherwise you may mash the ends of the threads
(ask me how I know).

Also, when the joint does let go (often with a loudish "crack" that is
alarming the first time you hear it), it stops the parts from falling on the 
floor ;-)
