Normally (and originally) PL700s were incandescent (and none too bright).
There have been halogen inserts available in the past, but I don't know if
they still are or not. Note that, while they look indisputably cool, PL700s
were neither original to US-spec cars, nor IMO are they an upgrade over the
original DOT-approved incandescent headlamps. All the disadvantages of
non-sealed reflectors without any of the advantages of modern headlamps.

The lamps and bulbs that I suggested you get from Daniel Stern (also
available from lots of other sources) will not "overtax" the original
wiring. So it's entirely possible and practical to just install the lamps &
bulbs now (which IMO are a significant improvement over stock) without the
wiring upgrade. They plug right in to the original (US spec) connectors.

However, the wiring upgrade will improve both brightness and reliability no
matter what kind of headlamps you use, even the original (to the US) sealed
beams or the PL700s. Not to mention extending the lives of the expensive &
hard to find dimmer and headlight switches.
