Ah, the mystery of the non-floating floats. This is puzzling the
racers, too. And the new ones you buy seem more prone to leak than
old ones. Nearly everybody who in TR vintage racing that has carbs
with brass floats experiences this. One friend of mine lost three
floats in one weekend. It puzzles us.
Some think it's gasoline additives. One guy decided that it was
because the floats bounced up and down in dry chambers while the car
was being transported. neither of these theories seems to hold water
(or gas) though. Plus, so far the attempts at fixing them are usually
not successful. A word on that, though. If you apply very much heat,
the air inside will do what hot air normally does - expand and
contract, making the solder joint almost impossible to make solid.
one friend has put a tiny hole in the float, then soldered up the
seam, and then when it's cool he soldered the little hole.
