Jerry almost incidentally mentioned taking the fan hub and pulley apart -- which I did, allowing me to slip the assembly out past the cross brace and steering rack. Not easy, but less hard than removing either of those. The real test is whether I can reassemble the car and still have time to make drunken noodles tonight.
