It is also good practice to disconnect the coil wire from the distributor and ground it (or otherwise disable the ignition system). Cranking the engine with the ignition key sends power to the coil. If you just disconnect the plug wires, all that high voltage will go looking for mischief--like burning through the plug wire insulation or setting fire to those little puffs of gasoline vapor coming out the other three spark plug holes.
