How was it destroyed ? The felt is supposed to be soaked in oil before
installing, and should only contact the highly polished surface of the vertical
link. Under these conditions it will wear very slowly ... what went wrong ?

I'd suggest doing your homework first, as I seriously doubt that your problem
was caused by excess seal thickness. The seal thickness issue arises when
setting the bearing clearance, as apparently the instructions are not consistent
in all references.
