That was a low cost method of a lamp check function (which was probably also
a requirement - why have warning lights if they are burned out?) it is a
question of priorities. If you loose oil pressure you could loose your engine.
If
you loose your brakes you can loose your life. I guess S-T thought the
latter was more important.
