You know, I had a problem with mine where this same effect happened; it
pulled itself back in. On the knob assembly; the outer cable tubing is
affixed to the knob housing where there is a crimping area. On mine,
this crimp had failed and the outer cable tubing was free to move about.
Pushing the knob in and out was mostly just pushing the outer cable
housing back and forth but was not really actuating the chokes very
much. Also, there was little friction, naturally, so the choke would
walk itself back in on its own.

It is easy to check to see if this is the case, just look behind your
dash and see if the outer cable housings stay put while you move the
choke knob in and out.
