How did the factory do it?

In a number of stages:
Tub and chassis first, then paint, then main wiring looms, some of the trim
and body glass. Then drive completed assembly about 120 miles on a truck
from Liverpool to Coventry where it (hopefully) found all its mechanical
components - engine, gearbox, transmission and suspension ready and waiting
on a wheeled dolly - unless there was a strike.
Stuff tub and chassis in a high gallery in a plant, wait a few days until
wheeled dolly made a magic appearance thirty feet lower down and with a
double inverted 'U' frame eventually bring the two together. Lower
tub/chassis on the mechanical bits and bobs, get lots of air wrenches, some
rubber faced hammers and bits of wood to force things to fit, bolt it all up
and then drive it off the end of the line.
It helps if you have a factory in which to do it, at least 300 strong men -
and a tea-break :)
