<I guess that must mean they used a left hand thread in there just to confuse things!> No, the adjusting screw does have right hand thread. The screw threads into the female threaded portion of the top of the needle. When you turn the screw, which is held stationary, it screws into the top of the needle which pulls the needle toward it, thus raising it and richening the mixture.
