The damper functions similar to the accelerator pump on a 'conventional'
carb, it richens the mixture after you open the throttle quickly. Changing
the viscosity of the oil is analogous to changing the size of the
accelerator pump, it determines how much richer the mixture goes and how
long it stays rich. But, like so many things in car engines, more isn't
always better! On my TR3A with stock SU H6 carbs, straight 40 weight motor
oil was too thick, IMO.

I don't recall the exact words offhand, but the TR2/3 owner's manual says to
periodically fill the dashpot above the level of the inner sleeve. This
didn't make sense to me, as the oil above the sleeve will eventually run
down between the sleeve and the dome (into the engine and get burnt) ...
until I realized that in doing so, it lubricates the bearing in the dome !
So, I don't believe you should expect the level to stay there (some people
worried that it didn't), it's normal for the level to drop somewhat over a
few days. As long as you can feel resistance when you insert the plunger,
the oil level is adequate for operation. Occasionally overfilling to
lubricate the dome is probably still a good idea tho, as long as you don't
overdo it.
