Paul,
'All of the symptoms' might be $7 worth of planet gear thrust washers. Easy
to install. Just need to pick the right thickness - see workshop manual.
Other than this unlikely 'solo' problem and simple fix (for wear adjustments
on other items) he might bring rear-end to good local rear-end rebuilder for
diagnosis and adjustment - this rear-end is a very typical design. But
rearranging shims to correct the crown-pinion 'backlash' is finicky for
first-timers
(sometimes requiring multiple full re-dismantlings even by the experienced
rebuilder) and removing the deepest pinion bearing race is quite rigorous (do
you
have the right bearing race driver and good sledge hammer?).
ps; although the manual states you need a Churchill 'case spreader' (crown
gear carrier bearings are 'preloaded') all the rebuilders I talked with said a
large crow bar to yank the guts was fine - and a very typical practice.
Having a local rebuilder diagnose and repair the rear-end seems high at your
quoted $1200 - I guess this includes all new bearings, seals, and a
crown/pinion gear set too? It actually might not need new gears, only one
bearing, seals
- and the resetting of backlash.

Asking this question for a fellow TR owner of a 63 TR4. He has come to the
conclusion that he needs some major work on his rear end. All of the symtoms
point to it. The question is whether a home rebuild is doable, or is it worth
the money ($1200) to have it rebuilt?
Thanks,
Paul Brandsema
