Charlie-
Don't feel stupid for a moment!!! After all, I'm the guy who kept
driving my car til the chainwheel fell off and the chain wrapped around
the crankpulley and wiped out the chaincover! You think getting the
cover bolts out was tough? try it after the chain cover has grown about
1.5" in width and covers up the bolts!! Congratulations on taking the
smart way out of this one.
        Cheers!
                Bob W.

BTW- I spend most of my weekends in West Park, across the Hudson from
Poughkeepsie. Let me know when the car is back on the road, I'd like
to see it.... ( and maybe that Beer!) BW

Bob,

It looks like I owe you a beer or maybe several!! The two bolts are not
even finger tight. The whole gear was just barely hanging on.

I will continue to take things apart and replace as needed but this sure
looks like the main problem. Thanks again.!!

Also Randle, thanks for the method for removing the entension bolt. It
worked fine as soon as I figured out what BFH stood for. Thanks!!

I must have spent an extra 30 minutes getting the timing cover off. I
removed all the bolts on the edge of the cover but could not get it took
to come free. Finally I notice there is a bolt just below the pointer
thing in the middle of the cover. Do I feel stupid!!

I will bet you a beer there is something fishy going on with
either the cam chain tensioner, or the two rather small bolts that hold
the cam's chainwheel onto the camshaft. The symptoms you described in
this note, and your earlier note of around 7-2-03 to the list set off the
alarm bells in my head.... I had the same noise and a rather loud final
noise that led to the discovery of sheared off cam chainwheel bolts. BTDT.

Investigate before driving anywhere.... Unfortunately the whole front
of the car ( apron, radiator, etc.... ) must come off for a good look,
although you might be able to figure out how to immobilize the cam and
then try to rotate the crank to see how much clunk & slop is present in
the cam chain assembly.
Good Luck!
