I agree it makes sense that it is a fuel blockage or an air lock but I've
checked for flow from the tank to the pump and it's flowing very freely. I
don't see how the pump would have gotten any crap in it because the filter
would / should have prevented that.

I would still suspect air in the system, or some sort of sucked in grit from
the tank bottom. I had a diesel that simply was hell to bleed. I dared not
let it run out of fuel or it would take a lot of individual bleeding to get
clean. Good luck.
