Sure sounds dodgy to me, but I can't say I've ever tried it either.

BTW, just for clarity, by "cut-down corrugated hose" here, I was talking
about the universal replacement stuff sold at auto parts dealers. Although
it looks similar to the original hose, it's much stiffer and conducts more
engine vibration to the radiator. Whether you actually have a problem with
it probably depends on things like how hard you drive the car and what
condition your motor mounts are in. But personally, I would far rather
spend the $12 or so on the correct hose, than take a chance on having to
pull the front apron !
