Maybe I'm wrong, but won't cranking for 10-20 seconds wear the mating>
surfaces as well?
There's a huge difference in how much wear you get spinning the engine
versus running the engine under load without oil pressure. When you get the
explosions going and put a load on the bearings and other metal surfaces
without oil pressure that's when the majority of wear happens...even if only
for a few seconds. You certainly have a great deal more wear letting it
start with zero oil pressure than spinning the engine to GET the oil
pressure up before a load is put on.
What's the first thing you're supposed to do when the oil light comes on
and/or the pressure gage drops to zero? Shut it down immediately! Engines
don't like zero oil pressure so why run it, even for a few seconds, that way
every time you do a cold start when it can be easily avoided.
I figure I start my car at least 200 times a year if not more. At 2-3
seconds for the oil pressure to come up that'd mean I'd run my car for 8-10
minutes without oil pressure. Not a good thing to do.
