David , I can't help with the popping, but my TR6, equipped with dual SU H6s
would act the exact same way when trying to start it. Left over night in the
garage, it would require approx 30 sec of cranking and full choke even in the
height of summer to get it to fire up. After that, everything was a quick
start,
except after sitting in the parking lot here at work for the day. Jump in at 6
to drive home and had to crank again with choke out.
My guess is the float bowls leaked/evaporated the gas away. I don't have any
problems now (because it's torn apart for a complete rebuild) but my solution
will be an electric fuel pump. Turn the key, wait a couple of secs to fill the
bowls, and crank it over.
