There is a cheap tool available that will do the trick. It is a wound spring
rod about 2.5 feet long ( they may make longer ones as well) that has a
spring loaded grabber running through it and a knob on the top. You press
the knob in and the little fingers come out and open at the other end.
Slowly release the knob and the fingers retract around your "foreign object"
(or the nut you dropped into the manifold etc.) and lift it out.
