After all of the negative experiences given with the Petronix ignition I would
like to offer a positive response. I installed mine several years ago and
haven't had any problems with it. Most of the people I have talked with that
had problems discovered that they did not have a ballasted coil or a separate
ballast elsewhere. This of course resulted in the coil providing too much
current to the Petronix Ignition and ultimately burning it out. I also had a
friend who did not push the magnetic collar all of the way down on the center
distributor shaft which resulted in misfires and dislocated magnets.
Genereally speaking I believe if you install a Petronix Ignition and it works
for a week or two it will probably be good for the generally expected life of
this type of electronic component, I like the stealth aspect of the Petronix
installation (completely enclosed within the distributor) and the realitive
cheapness ($79) of the Petronix ignition. Nevertheless, I still carry a spare
set of points, rotor and capacitor in a ziploc bag in my car.
