Hugh:

It is the exhaust valve springs that are "double capped", or at least
that's how my machinist assembled them. You're correct about using the
number one intake valve to set up your cam (the same one I have). On the
issue of which valve is which, just look at the side of your head. The
round holes correspond to the round holes on the intake manifold which
are aligned with the intake valve and spring right above it. The square
holes correspond to the square holes on the exhaust manifold.

Please get some additional information from the experts on the lists
about your cam and the need for shims. I just don't know about that or
why it was necessary.

I'm making progress, but I probably won't get very far today. I had
"after prom" duty yesterday, which meant pulling an all-nighter from
10:30pm to 6:30am. Oh, and did I mention that I wasn't smart enough to
prepare for it by at least taking a nap? I would not be safe around
machinery today.

Stay in touch and continued good luck on your rebuild.
