Joe,
After reading your last post about adjusting the carburetor using the
fast idle screw I remembered I had the same problem in the beginning.
When I spoke to Joe Curto about it he suggested drilling a small hole in
the bottom half of the butterfly to allow more air at idle. I started
with a 1/16 drill bit & kept enlarging it till the idle was stable and
the mixture screws alone would give me enough adjustment in a good idle
range. I ended up with a 1/8 opening. My timing is set at 12 degrees
with a total 32 degrees. No detonation or pinging. Car idles rock solid
at 850. I could lower or raise the idle now with the just the mixture
screws. This would also create a rich idle condition if not corrected.
Hope this helps.
PS If your distributor is turned so much that the cable still kinks
,repositioning the distributor is a pretty easy task.
