Peter,
you're right not to beat on the brake pedal assembly too much - the little
brackets are misleading - one side overlaps end of shaft - the other is
fitted around a groove slot in upper pedal assemblies.
its been a while but i think you remove the two shaft end bolts from shaft
then pull two pedals down and out of brackets - then you can remove the
brackets.
