If it's a clear day you might lay it in the sunshine for a few hours... 
especially
if it is a black top.  I would be wary though of the gap you described,
something's going to have to give and it could be your windscreen.  The 
windscreen
frame is not particularly rigid and could be pulled back quite a bit by a
too-tight top.

You might want to measure your bows to confirm they are positioned right.  If 
the
straps have shrunk or been replaced incorrectly this could affect the fit.  I
think I have a diagram with measurements I can send you.

IMO it is a little optimistic to think this will eat up carbon but a soaking in 
a
thin oil (Miracle Oil, Automatic Transmission Fluif or perhaps diesel) will help
things move a bit and can even free up a slightly seized engine.
