I called the owner of the car yesterday and had a chat with him.
Based on our conversation I'd have to say the car is legit. He bought it
with the idea of making money off of it but due to his desire to own a
Jag that came available all of a sudden he's faced with needing to get
rid of the TR4. Due to his own screw ups he is now faced with trying
to sell a very nice example of an original car in Hawaii. If that car was
anywhere in the continental US he would have NO problem getting
what he wanted originally and probably more.
The reason the wire wheel & hub was shown is simple, his first two
auctions (starting at $8500 I believe) he was going to throw in a set of
wire wheels that he had purchased for the car. After lowering the
price $3000 he decided to not include the wire wheels but forgot to
remove that picture. He will however make the wheels available for a
reasonable price the buyer of the car.
He is basically correct about shipping costs, it would run around $850
for a car from Hawaii to the west coast.
I seriously considered bidding on this car as I have a nice lump sum
coming into my hands today but decided that the 11 Triumphs that
Susan and I have should be enough for the next year or so.....!
My gut feeling is you could bid with the confidence that you're getting
what really is a 65 TR4 one owner (ok two if you count him) car.
As for the vin plate delima, looking at the pictures closely it seems to
me the original rivets are still in place and they look untampered with. I
think its entirely possible for the numbers to be so far apart. I believe
the reason there is no paint on the vin plate is the typical brake fluif
eating the paint syndrome. This is a later production TR4 afterall and
by that time the factory was probably getting tubs back from the repair
shop that had been shoved aside on the assembly line for some
reason (How about it Jonmac, is this possible?).
Just my $0.02 and definitely NFI...!
