Bob, I'm on Fred's side. $3500 is more than I paid for the entire car,
OD and all !
And, there are times when the electric OD (and the 6, not 5 distinct
forward gears it gives you) comes in handy.
Yes, it's somewhat troublesome, compared to the rest of the car, but
then, if reliability was all I was interested in, I'd just buy the whole
Toyota. But of course, not one that was over 40 years old ...
BTW, for those of you who are interested in the Toyota transplant, there
is a rumor that a new conversion kit will be available from Simi valley
in the not too terribly distant future. I don't know any details yet,
but there's at least a chance it will be officially announced at
Triumphest this year. IMO it's a safe bet that it will be superior to
the NZ kit, both in price and performance.
I'll be sure to pass any further info along to the list.
