Hi Tim
Robert was spot on with his diagnosis and repair, the only problem is your
gearbox sounds like and should be the later single rail box, (changed in
about 1974), I have not had this problem, but I would venture a couple of
possibilities, first there is a peg in the side of the box that supports the
reverse gear selector fork, these are in the habit of bending, this causes
the reverse to disappear, and it is possible that the mechanic tinkering
with the linkage creates just enough movement to allow the selection of
reverse for a day or two, the other and I hope for your sake this is what it
is, there is a nylon insert that fits into the loop on the end of the
linkage, this can work its way up and out of place, this can be repaired in
situe, the bent bit is a dismantle job.

| Hi Tim,
|
| I've had this kind of problem lots of times on the various Herald based
| cars I've owned over the years (Gt6's, 3 spitfires). 90% of the time it
| is wear in the bushes in the gearchange remote (the bit the gear lever
| goes into) that is bolted to the top of the gearbox. You can buy a
| re-bush kit that I'm fairly certain will fix most if not all of your
| friends problem. john kippings http://www.kipping.co.uk in the UK sell a
| kit, part number 519770 for 15 GBP, but I'm sure someone local (I'm
| assuming you are in the US) will be able to supply the parts as well.
| Hope this helps,
