Hi Tim,

I've had this kind of problem lots of times on the various Herald based
cars I've owned over the years (Gt6's, 3 spitfires). 90% of the time it
is wear in the bushes in the gearchange remote (the bit the gear lever
goes into) that is bolted to the top of the gearbox. You can buy a
re-bush kit that I'm fairly certain will fix most if not all of your
friends problem. john kippings http://www.kipping.co.uk in the UK sell a
kit, part number 519770 for 15 GBP, but I'm sure someone local (I'm
assuming you are in the US) will be able to supply the parts as well.
