status report...
i have my 72 gt6 in a driveable state now. today i drove it for the
first time.

1. i don't seem to know how to start it properly. the weather here is
dry, 60 degrees f in the morning (and late eve) and high 80s to 90 f
during the day. should i use the choke ? it seems that if i touch the
gas peddle it doesn't want to start. i got it going by playing with the
choke out, in, half out etc.
2. if i am at low rpm while driving the car is sputtering and back
firing
mid to a little higher rpm it is much better.
very high rpm it knocks quite a bit
so i had to keep the engine at mid rpm to make it happy.
when taking off from standing stop i have to really rev the engine
to get the car going else the engine will really bog.
3. the compression is 200 lbs in all cylinders (i verified). i know
this is high so someone had the head milled.
4. the spark plugs were black soot.
5. the car runs on when switched off even with the anti run on connected
to vacuum line and ignition switch and oil pressure sender. wires are
correct although i did not take a volt reading.
6. i have set the valves at .010 and rechecked them
7. i have set the points to .015 but do not have a dwell meter to check
that. how do you adjust the dwell anyway ? i don't know how to do
that.
8. i have set the timing to 12dbtdc with the vacuum disconnected from
the distributor
questions...
q1. what should i do about the timing ? if i set it lower the car will
not idle
q2. why does it run on ? there is not a large hose on the anti run on
valve. does that need to be connected too ? right now the only small
vacuum hose comes from bottom of rear carb to a the ant run on valve and
intake manifold via t connection.
q3. why does it bog from standing start ?
q4. why does it not like high rpm ? i am thinking timing, but if i pull
it back it won't idle.
q5. i don't know what gas is in the tank, only that it is not too old,
maybe a month or two. i don't know if the prev. owner put in regular or
premium. should i buy a can of octane booster to see what that does ?
q6. i ordered the carb adjusting tool to try and bring the mixture
leaner (black sooty spark plugs). i have seen some visual tools for
checking the mixture. can you recommend something ? the book says to
turn it one way, then out 3 1/2 turns or something like that, then turn
it the other way till the idle goes up (or down). is that method
(manual) good ? or should i buy one of these add on tools for checking
mixture ?

thank you for your assistance. hope my questions aren't too boring.
