Hi Rob
It is rumoured that the A is better, stronger than the J, but from my
experience, I have both (A in 150 bhp engined 2.5 PI sedan J in a modified
Dolomite Sprint), I can tell you that the A when it is working well (not
often at the moment!) is a more positive engagement in 2nd O/D than the J, I
have to slightly ease the throttle from WOT for the J to engage, however the
J is far easier to service / work on. From poorly to mended 1 repair, the A
will be on it's second repair to sort out the problems not sorted after a by
the book, Mr Finespanner (excellent web site, check recent postings for
link) rebuild, all new o rings etc.
My resort would be to fit a J if I had one spare!

Subject: A vs. J ODs in a TR6?
| I've got an A type overdrive in my 74 TR6 and am looking at changing to a
J
| type. Anybody have any strong preferences on which of these is better,
| stronger, easier to get parts for, etc.? If it makes any difference, the
| engine is a bit more than stock and has been rebuilt with an S2 cam, weber
| downdrafts and I'll be putting on a 9.25:1 CR head pretty soon.
