The issue, if it exists, is not DOT 3 vs DOT 4, but rather British brake
fluid vs everything else. Girling used to use natural rubber in their
brake components, and the DOT standards simply do not address natural
rubber instead of synthetic. So, AFAIK, the only 'safe' fluif is made
by Castrol, Girling, or Lockheed. Here in the USA, Castrol LMA (which
happens to be DOT 4 and also a very good brake fluid) is readily
available, and is safe for natural rubber.
