Thanks for the comments. I'll be taking the car to a garage tomorrow so I
can place it on a lift and have access to the cable connection. If this
solves the problem, it amazes me that something so simple would cause my
consternation.

Crud and build up prevented full tightening. You can check if it is sound
by pushing the inner cable from the speedo end, then try to turn by hand

with needle nose (lightly). It should not when inserted correctly and car
off. Estimate the distance from the end of the thread to the square bit
on
the cable, then estimate the distance it needs to go in the speedo. This
worked for me, and it ended up being the tranny end was not snug.
