No, if the hub is stopped (via the brakes) and the wheel is still
turning forward, it will unscrew the knockoff (if the knockoff decides
to turn with the wheel instead of the hub). Remember, the RHS knockoffs
unscrew clockwise, while the LHS ones unscrew widdershins.

Actually, it's not 'connected' to either one, in the sense that it
cannot turn relative to either the hub or the wheel. If it was, you
couldn't take it off ! (with healthy splines) Whether it turns with the
hub or with the wheel probably depends on the relative lubrication
between the tapered seat on the wheel, and the threads on the hub
extension. Since Murphy was an optimist, I sure wouldn't want to bet
against it turning with the wheel ...

I've done it on a TR3A rear wheel, it's definitely loud and clear that
something's very wrong !

FWIW, the DPO of my current TR3A apparently compensated for bad splines
by tightening the knockoffs extremely tight. I didn't learn of the
problem until the first time I had a wheel off to repair a tire, and
just tightened the knockoff normally when reinstalling it. Backed out
of the driveway, and attempted to drive up the street ... BRZZZZZZ !

And, I also agree that Pat's description doesn't sound like worn
splines.
Did TR4As ever have the adjustable brake shoe supports like some early
TR3s did ? They can cause a strange clunk when the brakes are released.
