I'm a fan of the emperical method. Remove the rear wheels and look. The
wheel rides on the outer part of the hub splines. So if you clean the
hubs up you will see how the splines looked new by looking at the inner
secton of the hub splines. If the outer splines are peaks with no flat
spot they are very worn. Look at the splines from the edge. If the
peaks seem to be listing to one side and not symetrical they are very
very worn.
The splines in your wheels should look like the inner splines of your hub
if they are in decent nick.
Your clunk could also be such things as a worn 'U' joint or worn rear
diff.
If your clunk is indeed real bad splines go ahead and drive on them if
you can not replace them right away. Afterall what can you hurt that is
not already worn out and ready for the recyclers.
But don't rule out a worn diff.
