There are a couple variants that I know of for the TR4A-TR250-TR6 dash
supports. The early TR4A one has what some call the 'volcano lipped' gear
shift hole (recoverings are not available for this one as far as I can find).
Then came the 'flat top' hole (new covers are sold in the catalogues. Lastly
I believe was the 'flat top' with 'knee pad recesses' as you mention. I see
between the Moss TR4 catalogue and Moss TR250-6 catalogue they sell about 3
versions by their code numbers..
When I put the great looking early TR4A support into my TR4 back in 1975 I
dissapointedly realized I just lost an inch or two of critical sideways knee
space for my long legs (but I went for looks anyway vs comfort at the time!).
This restoration time around I am planning on going back to my original
2-piece TR4 brace to be more accurate and get my knee space back! The only
problem besides not as good looking (IMO) is I have heard some folks don't
exactly like hitting the unupholstered and slightly protruding radio bracket
with their knee on a regular basis - I seem to recall the same so I may put
in side plates (next to radio sides) to counteract that protruding part of
radio bracket.
ps; I have seen a couple of professionally recovered braces in naugahyde or
vinyl (not the Moss recover kit) in books or internet sites over the last
couple years - and was impressed. An extra seem is necessary due to extreme
shape of the brace - but must admit they still looked great.
