I examined two original cranks, one from a mid TR3A, the other from an early
TR4. The hole in the front is very close to 1.5 inches deep, the threads
extend into it roughly 1.25 inches. The threads are 5/8-18 UNF.

If you are removing the fan extension, and using just a flat washer and lock
washer to clamp the hub into place, a 1.25" bolt should work fine. I found
that the flat washer would not clamp the hub tightly enough (it hits the
crank nose), so had to make a clamp piece that wound up being roughly 1/4"
thick, and switched to a 1.5" bolt. Adding shims between the hub and timing
chain sprocket might be another way to solve the problem, but I didn't think
of it at the time.
